Hardware Eye for the Database Guy (Episodes 2–4 at NoCOUG Conference #102 on May 31)
If you missed the opening episode of Hardware Eye for the Database Guy at NoCOUG Conference #101 in February, you’re in luck because we have three more episodes for you at NoCOUG Conference #102 on Thursday, May 31 at the CarrAmerica Conference Center in Pleasanton.
Episode 2: Sohan DeMel will bring out a real live Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) and invite members of the audience onstage to pull out power cords, network cords, server trays, and disks, all while the database continues to process SwingBench transactions. You heard that right; you’re invited onstage to pull out power cords, network cords, server trays, and disks. When your CIO asks you what ODA is all about, you will be able to tell him what you saw in Episode 2 of Hardware Eye for the Database Guy. Click here for a detailed synopsis of Episode 2.
Episode 3: Kevin Closson is only the one guy who knows more about database hardware than anybody else on the third rock from the sun and he will appear in person at Conference #102 to star in Episode 3 of Hardware Eye for the Database Guy. He’ll go into I/O, data flow, NUMA, SMT, “core packing,” Turbo Boost, why CPU SKUs matter, and much more. If database hardware is as much a mystery to you as it is to us, you won’t want to miss this episode of Hardware Eye for the Database Guy. Click here for a detailed synopsis of Episode 3.
Episode 4: Episode 4 of Hardware Eye for the Database Guy plays out on two separate stages; the stage at CarrAmerica Conference Center where Dave Rubin will explain to you what Big Data is all about and in the test kitchen of the NoCOUG Journal where our very own Gwen Shapira puts the Big Data Appliance (BDA) through its paces and comes to a surprising conclusion. When your CIO asks you what the BDA is all about you won’t have to say something silly like “BDA is like ODA but badder.” Click here for a detailed synopsis of Episode 4.
