Mailbag: Is It Too Late For Me To Start Oracle?

Dear Mr Iggy,

I am a 40 year old man who wants to change a career path, is it too late for me to start Oracle at this age? I came across your book and could not stop reading it.

Kind Regards

A. G. [name withheld]
GIS Consultant

Dear A.,

I apologize for the delay in my reply; I hope you did not stop reading my book. Forty is not too late an age to begin a career in database administration; I have a close friend who became a database administrator at about your age.

I cannot predict whether you will successfully make a career transition—que sera, sera—but nothing stops you from continuing your studies. Knowledge of information technology can only help you in your current career. Since you live in the UK, you can acquire academic credit for your studies by pursuing a certificate or diploma in IT from the British Computer Society.

Best wishes,

Iggy

    Hello A.G.
I agree with Iggy that you should study DBA work if you think that you will enjoy it. But it need not be a change. I see that you are a GIS consultant. There is a good demand for GIS specialist DBA’s. You can consider it to merely be an expansion of your skills, not a change of careers.

    Good Luck,
    Claudia Zeiler
