Where Have All The Jobs Gone?
Did you know that there were 119,415 database administrators in the US in 2006? That’s according to the data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a post titled A Good Time To Be an Oracle DBA, the director of Oracle Certification suggests that US employers will hire database administrators in ever increasing numbers—and pay them high salaries—over the next decade; a contrary opinion suggests that the reasoning in the quoted CNN article was flawed because it did not adequately represent the overall findings of the NACE survey and relied on employment numbers for 2006, when the US economy was flying high. The Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008–09 Edition published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics does make interesting reading though; here is the section on database administrators.
I tested the waters by posting my resume on the HotJobs job board and received seven replies over the course of a week, none of which had anything to do with database administration. I counted the Oracle DBA positions listed nationwide in the past 30 days on HotJobs and found only 56—far fewer than I used to see before. Where have all the jobs gone? Whether or not US employers will hire database administrators in every increasing numbers over the next decade, I have to agree with the comment that “Now as much as ever, DBAs of all skill levels should look to shore up their skill sets and resumes.” Certification is not as inexpensive as suggested though. For example, you have to attend at least one instructor-led training course—in addition to passing the exams—in order to obtain the Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Professional credential. These instructor-led training courses are not cheap. For example, the Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop I training course offered by Oracle University lasts five days and cost 3,000 dollars, when last I checked. In addition, your employer will need to excuse your absence for five days and pay your transportation, boarding, and lodging costs. Finally, there’s the exam fees and travel to an Authorized Prometric Testing Center.
But books are plentiful; here is a list of reading suggestions from Jonathan Lewis. All the Oracle reference manuals are available online. Oracle software is free to download and free to learn. And no one can stop you and me from studying hard.
